false false false en-gb x-none x-none while the uk’s aviation attention this year has been focused on the celebrations marking the centenary of the royal air force, april 1918 also saw the renaming of the royal aircraft factory as the royal aircraft establishment. over the subsequent century the rae became the world’s single most productive centre for game-changing aeronautical research, development, testing and evaluation, and ensured farnborough’s place in aviation history. to mark this milestone fast opened a major exhibition at its museum in may, rae100, to highlight some of the most significant innovations from the list of more than three hundred that were identified, spread across thirty areas of r&d activity. this exhibition was transferred to the heritage area at the recent farnborough international air show, situated in its own pavilion near the western end of the flight-line, where it attracted considerable interest from visitors. it has now been reinstated back at the fast museum, beside farnborough road, where it will be on view for the rest of the year. a lavishly illustrated book of the exhibition (price £10) describing in more detail the massive contribution that the rae scientists, technicians and test pilots made to aviation since 1918 is now on sale at the fast museum shop which is open every weekend throughout the year, entry free. the museum was closed to the public during air show week as it was hired out to corporate organisations who used it as a base for briefings, presentations and hosting client receptions. this produced a considerable income for fast, a registered charity, which depends largely on shop sales and pre-booked events at the museum and group visits to raise funds. an added attraction, proving to be very popular with groups and individual visitors, and another generator of revenues, are the guided tours of the historic wind-tunnels that take place on selected week-days, but must be pre-booked in advance. the wind tunnels are opened up so visitors can examine the mechanisms and hidden duct areas under fast supervision, and talks about the use and history of each section of the tunnels is included in the tours, which start and end at the museum, where free car parking is available. fast has now transferred some exhibits from its stored collection into the wind tunnels to further enhance the educational value of the interiors of these unique and massive structures. the tours last around two hours and include access to the museum as well as the wind tunnels. museum office hours are focused during the week on tuesdays and thursdays, and every weekend. telephone 01252 e-mail: [email protected] farnborough air show highlights uk’s leading aerospace sector by jacquifletcher • 21 aug, 2018 12.00 normal 0 false false false en-gb x-none x-none microsoftinternetexplorer4 the farnborough aerospace consortium (fac) said this year’s air show was the best yet, with interest from around the world. it had nearly 30 members present for the week who generated millions of pounds worth of potential business. fac supports around 300 companies – mostly smes in the south and south east of england. however, because of its influence it also has members based in the us and in the gulf states. david barnes its chief executive officer said that large businesses from around the world were targeting fac and its members because the uk’s aerospace supply industry is very strong in the south east. he said: “we are recognised internationally because of our history and the association with farnborough. this year there was a real buzz and was probably the most successful show ever for us. the leads generated are expected to develop into millions of pounds worth of business. it attracted exactly the right sort of people; we had a number of mps and government ministers visit our stand and the prime minister also attended the show. “mark carney, the governor of the bank of england, came to speak with us and we saw a number of other influential figures. representatives from industry came from around the world and were clearly impressed with the products and services on offer. “there was interest from europe, the us and the middle east, but also from emerging markets including china and india. our aerospace industry is one to be extremely proud of and the breadth of industries in the supply chain would surprise many. “being based in farnborough means we are at the heart of the aerospace sector in the uk and if the feedback from this year’s show is anything to go by the industry is in rude health. we will be at the next show in 2020 and in the meantime our members will be following up the leads from this year.” the fac acts as a link between large global prime contractors, government and academia with smes in the supply chain, and as enabler of business support to its members and partners. more posts 250+ organisations 18+ sector groups 150+ approvals &
